Allen Named Athlete of the Year, Six Athenas Earn All-SCIAC Honors
LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. – Late last week, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) released the honorees for their end of season awards. The Athenas earned a total of six All-SCIAC honors with three student-athletes named First Team and three more earning Second Team accolades. Sophomore Catherine Allen (SC) highlighted the season awards, being named the 2018 SCIAC Athlete of the Year after a stellar season for the Athenas.
In addition to her Athlete of the Year honors, Allen was named First Team All-SCIAC along with teammates Nicole Tan (CMC) and Lindsay Brown (CMC). As mentioned, CMS had three Second Team honorees with Rebecca Berger (CMC), Kyla Scott (HMC), and Caroline Cox (CMC) each earning All-Conference nods.
Over the weekend, the Athenas claimed the 2018 SCIAC Tournament Championship in convincing fashion with a pair of 5-0 victories over Chapman on Friday and Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday. With the victory, CMS advances to the NCAA Tournament and will host regional play at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center from May 10-12.
Catherine Allen claimed the 2018 SCIAC Athlete of the Year honor after a fantastic season that saw the sophomore go 13-4 in singles play while splitting time between the top two singles courts. Allen's season has consisted of 11 straight-set victories in singles play and an overall record of 19-2 in doubles play while partnering with fellow All-SCIAC honoree, Caroline Cox. Allen's First Team honor is her second in as many seasons.
Nicole Tan also earned First Team All-SCIAC while splitting time between the top two singles spots. Tan has turned in a singles record of 14-4 so far this season, including victories in her last five singles matches. In doubles play, Tan has paired with Lindsay Brown for all but one of her matches and owns a 16-5 doubles record on the season. Tan's First Team honor follows up her first Team accolade from last season when she was also named the SCIAC's Newcomer of the Year.
The final Athena named First Team All-SCIAC is no stranger to the All-Conference team. Lindsay Brown earned her fourth-straight All-SCIAC honor with a First Team honor this season. The senior finishes her career with two First Team (2016 and 2018) and two Second Team honors (2015 and 2017). Playing primarily in the three-spot in singles play, Brown has dropped just one match this season (16-1) and at the top doubles match, Brown has primarily partnered with Nicole Tan to hold an overall record of 17-5.
Kyla Scott also earned her fourth All-SCIAC honor this season with a Second Team honor. Scott finishes her career with three Second Team honors (2015, 2016, and 2018) and a First Team award in 2017. This season Scott holds a 10-5 singles record, primarily on the No. 4 court. In doubles play, she has partnered with fellow Mudder, Juliette Martin, for a 19-1 record this season.
Joining Scott on the Second Team this season are a pair of freshman who have made an immediate impact for the Athenas this season. Rebecca Berger has played in just four doubles matches, but owns a 4-0 record. Her impact has been felt in singles play, where the freshman holds a 15-2 record this season. Berger has move around the line-up a little bit, appearing in all six singles spots throughout the season for the Athenas, also winning a match in all six spots.
Caroline Cox also earned Second Team honors during a successful freshman campaign. Cox joined with Catherine Allen in doubles play and the duo holds an 18-2 record so far this season in the second doubles spot. She has also put together a record of 14-4 in singles play.
The Athenas will continue their postseason journey with NCAA Regionals this weekend. CMS earned a bye through the First Round of the Tournament and will play the winner of UT Tyler vs. Whitman on Friday at 10:00 a.m. on Friday morning.
