Athenas Top No. 7 Polar Bears and No. 12 Tigers to Extend Winning Streak

CLAREMONT, Calif. – It was two more ranked tests for the No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team when the Athenas hosted the No. 7 Bowdoin Polar Bears and No. 12 Sewanee Tigers on Saturday afternoon. The Athenas passed both tests with flying colors to earn their 14th and 15th victories to begin the season.

Match One – No. 3 CMS defeats No. 7 Bowdoin 7-2

Against the Polar Bears in their first match of the day, CMS built a 3-0 cushion thanks to a dominate effort in doubles play. The Athenas then won four of the six singles matches to clinch the 7-2 victory.

The Athenas dropped just two games across the three doubles matches, Catherine Allen (SC) and Caroline Cox (CMC) combined to earn a convincing 8-0 victory at #2 doubles while Mudders, Kyla Scott (HMC) and Juliette Martin (HMC) teamed up for an 8-0 win to earn the Athenas second point of the match at #3 doubles.

Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Nicole Tan (CMC) earned an 8-2 victory at the top doubles spot to complete the doubles sweep and give CMS a 3-0 advantage heading to singles play.

In singles, the Athenas won four matches to seal the victory. Rebecca Berger (CMC) dropped just two games while claiming #5 singles with a score of 6-1, 6-1. At #2 singles, Brown was nearly as dominate as Berger earning a 6-1, 6-2 victory for the Athenas.

Kyla Scott and Madison Shea (CMC) both earned singles victories for the Athenas as well. Scott claimed a 6-3, 6-1 victory at #3 singles, while Shea battled her way to a 7-5, 7-5 win at #6 singles.

Match Two – No. 3 CMS defeats No. 12 Sewanee 9-0

Much like they did in the morning session, the Athenas made quick work of the Tigers in the backend of their doubleheader. CMS built a 3-0 lead after doubles before winning all six singles matches in straight-sets to earn their eighth, 9-0 sweep of the season.

The Athenas put the same three doubles teams on the court against Sewanee as they did earlier in the day against Bowdoin. The Scott/Martin team did not drop a game and earned the 8-0 victory in the #3 doubles match. Brown/Tan and Allen/Cox also earned commanding victories in the #1 and #2 doubles matches, respectively. Brown/Tan won at the top spot with a score of 8-3, while Allen/Cox claimed an 8-5 victory.

As mentioned, the Athenas took all six singles matches in straight-sets with Caroline Cox and Rebecca Berger earning the most dominating victories at the #3 and #4 matches, respectively. Berger dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory at #4 singles and Cox dropped a pair of games in the first set before cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win in the #3 match.

Catherine Allen (6-3, 6-1 - #1), Lindsay Brown (6-2, 6-3 - #2), Jessie Cruz (7-6, 6-4 - #5), and Madison Shea (6-3, 6-1 - #6) also earned singles victories for the Athenas in the victory.

With two wins on the day, CMS improves to 15-0 on the season and will next take the court on Wednesday when they host the No. 8 Tufts Jumbos at 6:00 p.m.
