Athenas Down Lehigh and Texas-Dallas, Improve to 12-0

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team improved to 12-0 on the season with a pair of convincing victories on Wednesday. In the morning, the Athenas topped Division I Lehigh University by a score of 7-2 before sweeping the Texas-Dallas Comets 9-0 in their afternoon session.

Match One – CMS defeats Lehigh 7-2

After sitting through an hour delay while the courts dried after overnight rain, CMS earned a 7-2 victory over the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. CMS swept through doubles play to build a 3-0 lead before strong singles play earned CMS the victory.

The Athenas claimed their first point of the day with the #3 doubles team of Kyla Scott (HMC) and Juliette Martin (HMC) earning an 8-4 victory. The duo of Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Nicole Tan (CMC) matched their teammates with an 8-4 victory at #1 doubles, but the doubles match of the day came from Catherine Allen (SC) and Caroline Cox (CMC) at #2 doubles.

Allen/Cox were pitted against Paula Gonzalez and Sibel Can of Lehigh and battled their way to an 8-7 victory. The duo saved seven match points before eventually taking the match in a tiebreaker to give the Athenas a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.

Coming off their dramatic victory in doubles play, Allen and Cox carried that momentum into their singles matches. Both were dominate in 6-1, 6-1 victories. Allen was first off the court in #2 singles and Cox was quickly behind her at #5 singles to clinch the match for CMS.

With the match already wrapped up, CMS won the next two points for good measure to take the first seven points of the match. Lindsay Brown and Kyla Scott (HMC) captured singles points for the Athenas with victories at #3 and #4 singles, respectively. Brown earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the third spot, while Scott claimed the #4 singles match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Lehigh took the final two points of the match at #6 and #1 singles, but the Athenas captured their 11th-straight win to open the season with an impressive one over a Division I team.

Match Two – CMS defeats Texas-Dallas 9-0

The Athenas carried the momentum from their morning match against Lehigh into a 9-0 sweep of the University of Texas-Dallas Comets. Like they did in their first match of the day, CMS took a 3-0 lead after doubles play and never looked back, using a deep and talented line-up to claim the sweep. Allen and Cox combined for an 8-1 victory in the top doubles spot while in #3 doubles, Lauren Yamagami (CMC) and Rebecca Berger (CMC) also earned a dominate 8-1 victory.

With a 3-0 lead heading to singles play, CMS continued their strong play with a sweep of singles to earn the 9-0 victory. Scott, Berger, Jessie Cruz (CMC), and Madison Shea (CMC) all earned straight-set victories for the Athenas in their singles matches.
