Women's Tennis Tops No. 24 Southwestern to Start Texas Trip

GEORGETOWN, Texas – In a Top-25 showdown, the No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team improved their winning streak to nine matches with an 8-1 victory over the No. 24 Southwestern Pirates on Friday afternoon. The Athenas won all six singles matches in straight sets and picked up two of the three doubles matches for the convincing victory.

The #2 doubles team of Kyla Scott (HMC) and Juliette Martin (HMC) was the first off the court, earning an 8-2 victory over the Pirates duo. The top doubles pair of Lindsay Brown (CMC) and Nicole Tan (CMC) swept their way through the Anna Schneemann and Mary Cardone with an 8-0 victory to give CMS a 2-0 lead. Southwestern earned their lone point of the match in the #3 doubles match earning an 8-6 victory.

In singles play, Jessie Cruz (CMC) earned the third point for the Athenas with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Cecile Wilde. Her victory was the most convincing in singles play for CMS. Caroline Cox (CMC), Anastasia Bryan-Ajania (SC), and Rebecca Berger (CMC) all dropped less than six total games in their straight-set victories. Cox earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at the #3 singles and Berger took the #5 singles match by a score of 6-2, 6-2.

Bryan-Ajania was second off the court in singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the #4 singles spot. Catherine Allen (SC) clinched the match victory for the Athenas with a victory at #2 singles. Allen won her first set 6-2, but had to battle her way through the second set. She won that set 7-5 and swept her match, 6-2, 7-5. Nicole Tan (CMC) also had to grind her way through her second set, but also earned a straight-set victory with a 6-3, 7-6 win at the top singles spot.

The Athenas continue their Texas swing with a pair of matches tomorrow. CMS will take on No. 16 Trinity (TX) at 10:00 a.m. CT/8:00 a.m. PT and No. 34 East Texas Baptist at 2:00 p.m. CT/12:00 p.m. PT.
