Doubles fire power gives CMS 5-0 win

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team made quick work of the 21st-ranked team in Division II, Azusa Pacific University. The Athenas (20-0) took a dominant 3-0 lead after the doubles and then just needed two wins in singles play to secure the 5-0 victory.

The Athenas brought more fire power than the Cougars in doubles play. CMS took the 7-0 lead on both courts No. 1 and 2. Junior Lindsay Brown (CMC) and freshman Nicole Tan (CMC) swept their opponents to win 8-0. Brown and freshman Catherine Allen (SC) from court two were relentless with aggressive overheads. Allen and Kuosman dropped two games but then were able to finish out their match, winning 8-2.

In the final match of doubles play, pair of freshman Madison Shea (CMC) and sophomore Jessie Cruz (CMC) got broken early but then came back with a service break to take the 4-3 lead. The pair put together two strong games to extend their lead to 6-3 and then completed the doubles sweep with the 8-5 victory at No. 3.

The Athenas did not need much to complete the victory, but got after it in singles nonetheless. Kuosman at No. 6 earned the team's fourth point with a winner down the line on her serve. Her final score was 6-0, 6-3. Next, freshman Ana Bryan-Ajania (SC) was racing Brown, who was playing at No. 4, to finish first. Bryan-Ajania went up 6-0 in the first set and the served for the win in four straight points, taking the second 6-3.

Due to the match just being played to decision, Tan's potential comeback at No. 1 was left unfinished.

Next up, the Athenas host Occidental (3-10, 1-4) tomorrow, April 15, at 10 a.m.
