CMS Women's Swim and Dive Takes 237-59 Win over Caltech in SCIAC Dual

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team won 17 of 18 events as it captured a 237-59 dual win over Caltech on Saturday afternoon at Axelrood Pool.

With the win, CMS is now 3-0 in SCIAC and 3-2 overall, with the defeats coming to Division I programs UC San Diego and CSU Bakersfield on opening day. Allyson Yao picked up three individual wins on the day (200 fly, 50 free, 200 IM), and Sun Young Byun (200 free, 100 fly) and Katy Shaw (500 free, 1000 free) each had two.

CMS opened up with a one-two finish in the one-meter dive, with Meilan Uyeno getting a score of 298.65 and Alexis Romero coming in second with a 269.40. 

The Athenas then had the top three finishes in the 200-yard medley relay, with the A team of Byun, Milan Manfredi, Yao and Ally Rudolph taking first in 1:48.43, winning by just .4 over the B team of Annette Chang, Caroline Sundal, Mackenzie Mayfield and Annika Sharma

Shaw led a 1-2-3 finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a 10:36.84, with first-years Corley Smith (10:57.90) and Allison Nguyen (11:01.4) finishing second and third. 

Byun took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.07, as CMS had the top six. Sharma then paced a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 back in 59.63, and Manfredi led a 1-2-3 in the 100 breast with a 1:07.90.

Yao earned first in the 200 fly in 2:10.41 and Lexi Lee was first in the 50 free to close out the first half of the swimming session with a 25.37. 

After the break, in which Caltech picked up its only win in the three-meter dive, Yao won again in the 100 free in 55 seconds flat, with Lexi Punishill second and Anna Schrag third for another 1-2-3. Chang won the 200 back in 2:14.23, Mayfield took first in the 200 breast in 2:24.89, and Shaw earned her second win in the 500 free in 5:09.91. 
Byun added her second individual win in the 100 fly in 56.51, and Yao picked up her third in the 200 IM in 2:14.23. The 400 free relay saw Byun, Chang, Rudolph and Lee cap off the meet in 3:34.98 to give CMS a final margin of almost 200 points.

The Athenas will be back in action in three weeks when they host Pomona-Pitzer in a two-day meet on Dec. 1-2.
