Augusta Lewis, Jacque Desmond Sweep SCIAC Weekly Awards for CMS Women's Swimming and Diving

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Augusta Lewis and senior Jacque Desmond earned the SCIAC Women's Swimmer of the Week and SCIAC Women's Diver of the Week Awards respectively for events through Sunday, Dec. 8, the league office announced today.

Lewis and Desmond helped CMS to a dominant win over Pomona-Pitzer in a two-day dual meet on Friday and Saturday in a battle between the two top programs in the SCIAC. The Athenas came in ranked No. 11 in the nation, while the Sagehens were close behind at No. 13, but CMS was able to come away with a 200-153 win to establish itself as the team to beat in 2019-20.

Lewis, the reigning SCIAC Swimmer of the Year as a first-year last season, was dominant at the two-day meet, winning all four of her individual events while setting three new pool records at Pomona-Pitzer's Haldeman Pool. She ended up passing the facility record in the 400 IM by almost nine seconds, winning in 4:24.74 to shatter the old mark of 4:33.23, and trimmed almost four seconds of the Haldeman record in the 200 IM in 2:03.14 (passing the old mark of 2:06.95).

In addition to her IM dominance, Lewis also swept the two breaststroke events on Saturday, setting a new pool record in the 200 in 2:17.24, winning by five seconds. She also won the 100 breast in 1:03.99, an event she did compete in last year, as she moved into third-place in CMS history.

In the three-meter dive on Saturday, Desmond, who graduates this month, competed in her final event for the Athenas and took first place, winning with a final score of 268.90 over six dives. She had a strong final dive, which helped her hold off Emma van der Veen of Pomona-Pitzer (259.10) by less than 10 points to add one final win to her collegiate career.

CMS will have a month off from competition for exams and for the holiday break, before returning to action on Friday, Jan. 10 at the Cal Baptist Distance Meet.
