CMS Women's Soccer Defeats Occidental 3-0 for Fifth Straight Shutout

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Laurel Ovenell scored her first career goal in the 14th minute for the eventual game-winner, and Flora Glantz and Kaitlyn Helfrich added insurance goals, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team earned a 3-0 win over Occidental on Wednesday evening at Pritzlaff Field.

With the win, CMS improves to 5-5-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the SCIAC, while Occidental slips to 5-3-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the SCIAC. The Athenas also moved past Occidental and into the third place in the league, trailing only co-leaders Pomona-Pitzer and Cal Lutheran at 6-0-2.

Ovenell scored her first goal as an Athena on a header off a cross from Glantz, sending it looping over the head of Occidnetal goalkeeper Ingrid Odmark, off the post and in.

Less than four minutes later, Glantz had a goal of her own as Riley Zitar got to an Occidental clearance attempt and played a short pass to Glantz at the top of the box. She turned in one motion and cracked a shot that hit off the underside of the crossbar and went in to make it a 2-0 game at the 17:52 mark.

The Athenas tacked on one final goal with 6:06 left when Ivy Doran made a long run up the right side and cut back to the middle of the field. She slotted a pass into a gap between Occidental defenders, and Helfrich was able to run onto it 10 yards from goal and tuck a shot inside the left post to make it a 3-0 final.

Sadie Brown had four saves to get the shutout, but wasn't seriously tested as the Athenas continued to play lock down defense, led by center backs Emma Fogg and Annie McKinley. CMS has not allowed a goal in its last five games, and has a scoreless streak of 533 minutes since suffering an own goal early (eighth minute) in a defeat to Redlands.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts La Verne for an 11 a.m. contest at Pritzlaff Field.
