Athenas Soccer Plays to Scoreless Tie with No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team had the better of the play, but had to settle for a 0-0 tie with undefeated and seventh-ranked Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday night at Pritzlaff Field.

The tie moves CMS to 2-5-2 on the season, and 1-3-1 in conference play, while Pomona-Pitzer suffers its first non-win of the season, slipping to 9-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in league play.

CMS held a 15-7 edge in shots in the game, including 10-2 in the first half in which it controlled play. Patricia DePalma had 10 saves for the Sagehens, while Sadie Brown had five for the Athenas to get the shutout.

Kateri Trujillo nearly had a highlight-reel goal for CMS on a shot from 25 yards in the first half, but DePalma was able to reach it at full extension to deny it from going into the upper-right corner. Flora Glantz had a strong effort in the second half after a cutback move, while Kaitlyn Helfrich

Brown had five saves, but wasn't seriously tested, as the defense remained stout in front of her, led by center backs Emma Fogg and Annie McKinley. McKenzie Emmons and Ava Allen were also strong at the outside back positions, with Ivy Doran adding support, while Riley Zitar and Laurel Ovenell had outstanding efforts in the midfield.

Tori Holden led all players with four shots, three of which were on target.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night when it travels to La Verne for a 7 p.m. contest.
