CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team held a 19-4 edge in shots, but couldn't find an equalizer after an own goal in the eighth minute, as it dropped a 1-0 decision to Redlands on Wednesday at Pritzlaff Field.
Redlands moves to 1-4-1 on the year with the win and stays perfect in the SCIAC at 1-0-1, while CMS slips to 1-5-1 overall and 0-3 in league play.
An unfortunate bounce caused the only goal of the game, as Redlands took a free kick in the eighth minute from just over midfield. The Bulldogs played a ball into the top of the penalty area, but it deflected off CMS just inside the top of the 18, and redirected over the head of goalkeeper Sadie Brown and into the net.
The Athenas kept the pressure on the rest of the contest, including holding a 10-1 advantage in shots after halftime, but Shannon Stewart finished with nine saves in net for the Bulldogs. Riley Zitar had three shots saves by Stewart, while Ava Schmitt and Tori Holden each had two. CMS also ended with an 8-1 edge in corner kicks to no avail.
CMS will look to bounce back when it returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Whittier for a 7 p.m. contest.
