Dearman-So Scores Goal as CMS Women's Soccer Defeats UC Santa Cruz 1-0

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Hannah Dearman-So tallied the only goal of the game 9:36 into the second half in a scramble off a free kick, enabling the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team to defeat UC Santa Cruz 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Pritzlaff Field as part of its Senior Day.

With the win, CMS saw its record move to 8-3-3 on the season, while the Banana Slugs fell to 6-8-2 with the loss. Prior to the game, the Athenas celebrated Senior Day as they honored their two seniors, Ava Sherry and Gracyn Buenconsejo, who will both be graduating from Harvey Mudd this year.

The game-winning goal came as Lizzie Iwicki played a perfect long ball on a free kick just over midfield which came down just outside the UC Santa Cruz goal area. Bryn Kable win the loose ball and set up Dearman-So for a finish inside the six-yard box for her first collegiate goal.

CMS finished with a 9-5 edge in shots, while Athena Manthouli played the first 81 minutes, improving her record to 8-3-3 on the season, as she combined on a shutout with Taylor Levinson, who finished off the final nine minutes.

The Athenas and the Banana Slugs met once earlier this season, as Kaitlyn Helfrich scored just 2:34 into the second half which led to a 1-0 road victory over UC Santa Cruz on Sep. 11.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when they return to SCIAC play with a home game against Redlands at 7 p.m. at Pritzlaff Field. That game will have major SCIAC Tournament implications for both teams, which enter the final week of the regular season in a tight four-way battle for the final two playoff spots, along with Occidental and Chapman.
