CMS Women's Soccer Picks Up 10th Win of Season on Senior Day

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Seniors Gabby Clouse and Rhiann Holman had goals on their Senior Day, and first-year midfielder Mia Duranczyk had a hat trick, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team earned a 7-0 win over Caltech on Saturday night at Pritzlaff Field.

The win was the 10th of the year for the Athenas, who improve to 10-3-3 overall and 6-3-2 in the SCIAC. CMS has just one regular season game left at Chapman on Saturday, where a win or a tie will allow CMS to return to the SCIAC Tournament for the first time since winning the 2016 title.

Holman, Clouse, Kira Favakeh, Sarah Tocher and Hayden Craig were honored before the contest for their Senior Day and then won their final regular season game at Pritzlaff. Tocher contributed two assists, and Craig played the second half in goal and combined on the shutout with junior starter Cam Hamson

"I can't even explain in words how meaningful it was," said Craig of contributing to the shutout on her Senior Day. "This team has been my family for the last four years, so to be out there with them to help make it happen was just a dream come true."

Clouse scored the first goal, which held up as the game-winner at the 12:07 mark of the first half, when she worked a give-and-go with first-year defender Taylor Arakaki. After feeding Arakaki down the sideline, Clouse sprinted to the middle and was able to volley the cross in from the top of the six-yard box for her fifth goal of the season.

The next two goals both came from Duranczyk off of some strong build up play. At the 24:45 mark, sophomore midfielder Nicole Oberlag played a cross into the box that was settled by sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Ueland down to Duranczyk, who fired a shot in from just inside the top of the 18-yard box.

With 2:35 left in the half, Duranczyk scored her second of the day, which was started on a long ball from junior midfielder Aarthi Namasivayam that connected with first-year forward Vida Hasson behind the Caltech defense. Hasson sent a cross into the box and Duranczyk one-timed it in for her second goal of the game. Just 1:40 later, CMS added another as first-year midfielder Stella Kahl played a through ball that sprung sophomore midfielder Sara Catherine Ueland in for a breakaway, which she rolled inside the right post with 55 seconds left in the half.

CMS added three more goals in the second half, as Holman headed in a shot inside the six-yard box off a cross from Tocher at the 58:33 mark, Kahl scored on a back pass inside the box from Tocher at the 63:40 mark, and Duranczyk finished off her hat trick when her 18-yard shot off a loose ball deflected in.

CMS had a 35-4 edge in shots on the day, including 21-1 in shots on net, as the two Beaver goalies combined for 14 saves. Tocher, Holman and Favakeh each also hit the crossbar once on the day.

The Athenas have Wednesday off before returning to action at Chapman next Saturday, with a chance to play their way into the SCIAC Tournament with a win or a tie.
