Athenas win season opener off Laube's brace
Claremont, CA – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team dominated in their season debut as they routed Carthage College 4-0. The Lady Reds were outmatched by the Athenas, as CMS outshot Carthage 27-4. Seniors Katelyn Faust (CMC) and junior Ellen Berkley (CMC) had a goal each while senior Laynee Laube (CMC) had a brace.
Despite controlling possession for majority of the time in the first half, CMS could not get a clean shot towards the net as the Lady Reds packed the backline. In the eighth minute, sophomore Sarah Malott (CMC) dribbled in to the right side of the box and shot from a tight angle. The shot deflected off the keeper and bounced towards senior Amy Johnson (CMC) who did not hesitate for the shot, but it sailed over the post.
The game seemed to have stagnated for CMS until the 24th minute when Faust scored the Athenas first goal of the season after getting a shot off from Laube's corner. The Athenas held onto the 1-0 throughout the first half as they held the Lady Reds to only a single shot.
The home team looked more composed in the second half as they managed to create quality looks in the box. Laube doubled the Athenas lead in the 52nd minute thanks to an assist from sophomore Maddie Peterson (SCR). After receiving a pass in the left wing, Peterson dribbled into the box and slipped a pass past her defender to Laube who was in the center of the box. Laube teed off and launched a shot to the top right of the net.
Laube matched her total goals scored last season after scoring a penalty kick in the 62nd minute. Freshman Samantha Lee (CMC) had a brilliant run in the right wing and tried to break into the opposing box, but got fouled by her marker to draw the penalty. Laube teed off again at the top right of the net past the keeper to give CMS a 3-0 lead.
In the 85th minute, the Carthage defense made a costly defensive error as they failed to clear out a corner from junior Sydney Flynn (CMC). The ball rolled off the defender's foot in front of Berkley who launched a rocket to the top right of the net.
For the Lady Reds, Corinne Brennan was the only player to get off more than one shot. In goal, Emily Furmanek made eight saves in the season-opener for Carthage.
CMS will look to build on their strong performance this Saturday, Sept. 3 on the road against Biola University at 4:30 p.m. They will head back home the following day to host UC Santa Cruz at 11:00 a.m.
