Showdown of SCIAC’s top two teams goes to CMS on Shields’ game-winner

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Twice this season the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team has defeated Pomona-Pitzer 1-0 and in both matches, the winning goal has come in the second half off the foot of senior forward Darrah Shields (CMC). The latest game-winner by Shields against Pomona-Pitzer came on Oct. 14 across Sixth Street, on Pomona-Pitzer's home pitch. CMS (8-4-3, 5-2-2 SCIAC) has now won five matches in a row and hasn't lost in its last seven matches. The win by CMS ended Pomona-Pitzer's six-game winning streak.

CMS' lone goal of the match came in the 87th minute off of an assist by junior forward Laynee Laube (CMC), her first of the season. Shields chased down Laube's pass on the left wing and beat two Pomona-Pitzer defenders to get off the shot from about 18 yards out, a left-footed shot that she arced into the top right-hand corner of the net, just over the outstretched hand of Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper Corey Goelz. It was the third game-winning goal of the season for Shields.

Despite winning the match, CMS was outshot by Pomona-Pitzer 18-8 and 7-3 in the second half. Junior goalie Kelly McConnell (HMC) and sophomore goalie Morgan McCoy (CMC) combined for the CMS shutout with five saves and four saves, respectively.

Over the course of the match's final 17-plus minutes, the CMS defense kept Pomona-Pitzer from attempting a shot. Their last shot of the match came at the 72:27 mark, a header by Melissa Hooke which McCoy saved. Less than five minutes into the second half, Pomona-Pitzer came just inches away from taking a 1-0 lead when Danika Bethune's shot hit off the right post.

The Athenas next head to La Verne on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. as they look to avenge a 2-1 home loss to La Verne on Sept. 23.
