Two goals in three minutes sink Athenas

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team lost a tight match to the University of La Verne Leopards Wednesday after allowing two similar goals in just under three minutes.

The Athenas nearly took the lead early as junior forward Katelyn Faust (CMC) just missed tapping in a low cross in front of the cage shortly after the opening kickoff.

After facing some early CMS pressure, La Verne responded well by taking control of the first half outshooting the Athenas 10-4, forcing three corner kicks along the way.

With both teams tied to begin the second frame, Maribel Duran stole the ball from Kelsey Heflin (CMC) at midfield and used her blazing speed to get around the CMS defense, beating a diving Kelly McConnell (HMC) high on the short-side for a 1-0 Leopards lead.

Less than three minutes later La Verne would tack on another as Jessica Hernandez took a clearing feed from Cassidy Schweiger and turned on the jets, once again speeding through the Athenas' back-line to roll the ball underneath a challenging McConnell at the top of the penalty box.

The Athenas came inches short of making it a one-goal game in the 55th minute when junior Makella Brems (CMC) ripped one off the crossbar and Faust took the rebound and shot it high.

Late in the game CMS would break the shutout as Darrah Shields (CMC) deflected a La Verne clearing attempt over to junior Emily Cassell (CMC), who sent a perfectly placed shot from the far side of the field into the top right corner of the net with four seconds remaining.

It would be the only CMS goal of the evening as La Verne would preserve the victory, dropping the Athenas to 3-4-1 (1-2).

CMS will get an attempt to avenge the loss on Oct. 17 when they travel to the University of La Verne for a re-match with the Leopards.

This Saturday CMS will travel to Cal Lutheran on to take on the 3-4 Regals. The two teams split both games last year in their season series, each winning once at home.
