CMS Women's Lacrosse Places Five on All-Region Second Team

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Five members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team earned spots on the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division III All-West Region second team, the organization announced today.

Senior goalkeeper Kendall Chapko, junior defender Natalie Teare, sophomore midfielder Cate Lewison, sophomore attack Grace Minturn, and first-year midfielder/draw specialist Julia Ryan were selected for the Athenas on the 31-member all-region teams.

Chapko had her best season statistically for the Athenas as a senior, recording a stingy 8.39 goals against average and a .476 save percentage. She tallied a career-high 18 saves in the SCIAC Championship game against Pomona-Pitzer, and earned the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week Award after allowing no goals in a combined 45 minutes against SCIAC Tournament qualifiers Chapman and Occidental.

Teare developed into an integral part of the CMS defense as a junior, tallying 34 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers, while helping the Athenas allow just 8.21 goals per game as a team. She had two caused turnovers in games against NCAA qualifiers Pomona-Pitzer and Colorado College, as well as twice against Chapman.

Lewison was the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year last season (in both women's soccer and women's lacrosse) and had another do-it-all type season for the Athenas this year. She finished with 39 goals and 18 assists for 57 points, ranking third on the team, while also leading CMS in ground balls with 54 and caused turnovers with 26. She was twice named the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week.

Minturn earned the SCIAC Athlete of the Year Award after a strong sophomore campaign that saw her lead CMS in goals (50) and points (72). She also had 37 ground balls and caused 18 turnovers. She had four goals in a game seven times, including all three meetings with Chapman, and scored three goals four other times, including against Chicago.

Ryan ranked in the top 10 in the nation (seventh) in draw controls with over 10 per game (10.21). She had double figures in draws 13 times, with a high of 16, and consistently contributed on offense as well with 17 goals and 18 assists on the year, tying for third in assists (just four behind Minturn for the team lead). She also picked up 25 ground balls for the Athenas.

The five CMS award winners are now eligible to be named to a national IWLCA All-American team. The IWLCA will announce the 2024 IWLCA Division III All-American teams on May 24.
