Big Third Quarter Leads CMS Women's Lacrosse Past Chapman 20-12

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team used an 8-0 run in the third quarter to turn an 8-8 tie into a 16-8 lead, and the Athenas went on to earn a 20-12 win over Chapman on Saturday at Zinda Field.

With the win, CMS moves into sole possession of second place in the SCIAC at 4-1, while Chapman sees its league record slip to 4-2.

Amelia Ulmer, Cate Lewison and Grace Minturn each had four goals to lead the way for the Athenas offensively, while Julia Ryan ahd 13 draw controls and Lewison added six. Taylor Daetz had four ground balls and three caused turnovers, tying Lewison and Audrey Donahue for team-high honors.

Ulmer scored in the final minute of the first half to tie the score 7-7 heading into the break, and then scored the first goal of the second half to give CMS an 8-7 lead. Annika Carlson knotted it back up for Chapman with 13:41 left in the third, before the Athenas scored eight in a row over a span of just over 11 minutes.

Lewison had three goals during the run, including the one that got it started, while Maggie Griffis had two. Avery Monahan and Lily Bishop capped it off with Bishop's goal coming with 2:20 left in the third to make the score 16-8.

The Panthers fought back to close to within 17-12 in the fourth, but Catherine Murphy scored two straight goals, and Minturn closed out the scoring at the buzzer on a pass from Lewison.

CMS will be back in action on Monday when it takes on Williams in a non-conference contest at Zinda Field at 7 p.m.
