CMS Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 7 Wesleyan in Non-Conference Contest

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Emma Merk scored two first-quarter goals and Bella Lynch added a pair as well, but the No. 7 Wesleyan women's lacrosse team scored eight times in the second quarter to pull away and take a 19-6 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday at the Pomona College South Athletics Complex.

With the win, Wesleyan moves to 5-0 on the season, while the Athenas slip to 3-2 with the loss. The game was moved to Pomona's turf field due to heavy overnight rain, which left the conditions at Zinda Field unsafe to play.

Lyla Johnston had a solid performance in goal for CMS with nine saves over the final three quarters. Emme McMullen also had a big day on draw controls, pulling in nine for the Athenas. Rachel Leonardi and Catherine Murphy added goals for CMS on the day.

Merk scored with 6:17 left in the first to cut the Wesleyan lead to 2-1, and then added a second with 2:42 left in the first to close the gap to 4-2. Wesleyan responded with the next six goals, with Kate Balicki scoring four of her five goals in the second quarter to help put it away.

CMS will be back in action next Thursday when it faces Cal Lutheran for a 7 p.m. contest, which was rescheduled after the original Feb. 25 scheduled game was postponed due to field conditions.
