Corie Hack, Zoe Ryan Sweep Major SCIAC Awards for CMS Women's Lacrosse
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior midfielder Corie Hack was named the SCIAC Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year, and junior defender Zoe Ryan was named the SCIAC Defensive Player of the Year in a vote of the conference's coaches, the league office announced today.
The Athenas, who finished the regular season 10-0 in SCIAC for the third season in a row, also had a league-high six players chosen to the league's first team. In addition to Hack and Ryan, sophomore attack Sally Abel, freshman midfielder Alex Futterman, junior midfielder Allie Hill and freshman goalkeeper Emma Goldfield were all named First-Team All-SCIAC. Junior defender Kira Weiss and freshman midfielder Sammie Cohen earned spots on the second team.
Hack earned the honor after a spectacular season, tallying 62 goals and 12 assists for a team-high 74 points, while becoming only the third player in school history to score 200 career goals. She has scored at least one goal in 63 straight games for the Athenas, dating back to her only scoreless game of her career, her sixth one as a freshman against Montclair State. She now has 203 goals and 37 assists in her career for 240 points, and enters the postseason tied for her career-high in goals scored, and already with her career-high in points.
Ryan was named the Defensive Player of the Year after helping to anchor a defense that allowed a league-best 6.56 goals per game, while allowing their opponents less than 20 shots per contest. She started all 15 games she played in, and totaled 26 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers on the year, while turning the ball over only 12 times herself. She also helped CMS allow only 5.8 goals a game in league play on its way to an undefeated league mark.
Abel had another big year offensively for the Athenas, as she went over the 100-point mark as only a sophomore. She enters the SCIAC Tournament with 44 goals this season and 91 in her two-year career. Hill also went over the 100-point mark in her career in the season opener and now has 138 on 62 goals and 76 assists, including a team-best 30 assists this spring, while also leading the Athenas in draw controls with 45.
Two first-year players also earned their way onto the All-SCIAC first team for CMS, as Alex Futterman earned the distinction after tallying 29 goals and 14 assists for 43 points, while picking up 38 draw controls. Goalie Emma Goldfield started eight games for the Athenas, tallying a 7-1 record, and had an 8.06 goals against average and a .496 save percentage.
Weiss was named to the All-SCIAC second team after leading the CMS defense in both caused turnovers (29) and ground balls (44). Cohen joined her after a strong rookie campaign in the midfield, tallying 25 goals and 17 assists for 42 points.
CMS, which has won 34 straight games against league opponents, including the last two conference postseason championships, will open SCIAC Tournament play on Wednesday night at home, taking on Chapman at 7 p.m. If the Athenas win, they would also host the SCIAC Championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the winner of the other semifinal between Occidental and Pomona-Pitzer.
