CMS Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Whittier for 30th Straight SCIAC Win

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team scored the game's first 11 goals as it won its 30th straight game against a SCIAC opponent, defeating Whittier 20-1 on Saturday afternoon at Zinda Field.

The Athenas reached the 10-win plateau for the season with the win, improving to 10-2 on the year and 6-0 in SCIAC. CMS has not lost a game to a league team since falling to Chapman in the 2016 SCIAC Semifinals, winning the last 26 regular season games and four SCAIC Tournament games since. Whittier falls to 3-10 overall and 0-6 in the SCIAC with the loss. 

CMS had a balanced offense with 13 different goal scorers on the day, as freshman Tessa Guerra led the way with her first collegiate hat trick. Freshman Alex Futterman had two goals and three assists to lead CMS with five points, while sophomore Sally Abel had two goals and two assists, sophomore Julia Mueller had two goals and an assist, and freshman Sammie Cohen and senior Corie Hack each had two goals. Junior Allie Hill had a goal and three assists to tie Futterman for team-high honors in assists, and sophomore Eloise Shields had a goal and two assists. 

The Athenas roared out to a 5-0 lead before Whittier even had possession in its offensive end, capturing the first five draw controls and scoring each time. Hill started the scoring 1:08 into the contest off a feed from Abel, and Guerra followed 37 seconds later to make it 2-0. Abel netted her first off a Futterman feed at the 27:46 mark, and Hack and Guerra scored 11 seconds apart to give CMS a 5-0 lead just 3:39 into the game. 

Futterman and Abel scored consecutive goals to make it 7-0 at the 21:25 mark, and Hack, Mueller, Cohen, junior Emma Johnson rattled off four more in succession to push the lead to 11-0 with 13:19 left in the half, before Whittier found the net for the first time. 

Sophomore Brielle Huddy and junior Sascha Reynolds capped off the half with goals to make it a 13-1 lead at the break, and senior Maddie Geary and junior defender Kira Weiss added second half goals. Shields capped off the scoring with 10:14 remaining with her first to give CMS 20 goals on the day. 

The Athenas held a 40-3 edge in shots, as freshman Emma Goldfield had two first-half saves, while junior Sara Reid didn't face a shot in the second half in relief. Senior Carly Keeney led CMS with three caused turnovers, while freshman Bella Godes led with four ground balls. 

The Athenas will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Redlands for a 7 p.m. contest, looking to extend their SCIAC win streak to 31.
