CMS Women's Lacrosse Concludes Spring Trip with 15-8 Win at Kean

KEAN, N.J. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team roared out to an 11-2 halftime lead and coasted to a 15-8 win over Kean University on Tuesday afternoon on the second half of its Spring Break trip to the Northeast.

With the win, the Athenas, who also defeated Montclair State on Sunday 12-10 in the first game of its trip, move to 8-1 on the season, with the only loss coming to nationally Colorado College. Kean slips to 1-4 on the year with the loss. 

CMS seized control of the game early, jumping out to a 5-0 lead just 7:18 into the game. Senior Maddie Geary scored twice during the run, turning a 2-0 lead into a 4-0 lead with two goals 1:26 apart. Sophomore Sally Abel capped off the run with a goal off a feed from freshman Sammie Cohen, who opened the scoring 51 seconds into the game on a free position shot. 

After Kean broke the ice and closed to within 5-1, CMS scored three more in a row to build an 8-1 lead. Senior Corie Hack scored to start the mini-run, before feeding junior Allie Hill for a goal with 14:39 to go in the half to make it 7-1. Abel scored her second goal of the half to stretch the lead to 8-1. 

Kean closed to within 8-2, but CMS closed the half with another 3-0 run to build an 11-2 lead at the break. Geary fed junior Emily Cohen for a goal at the 5:18 mark, Sammie Cohen scored her second on a free position shot with 4:24 to go, and Abel fed sophomore Sascha Reynolds with 2:13 left. 

Freshman Alex Futterman started the second half with a goal to put CMS ahead by 10. Kean temporarily brought it back down to nine at 12-3 with 22:40 left, but freshman Tessa Guerra restored the 10-goal lead with 18:58 left on a feed from Hack. Abel and Hack added goals at 15:02 and 13:28, respectively, to give CMS its largest lead at 15-4, before Kean closed out on a 4-0 run in the final 7:54 to make the final margin 15-8. 

Hack finished with three goals and two assists and Abel had three goals and an assist to lead CMS. Geary and Sammie Cohen each finished with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Anna Gillespie had 11 saves to get the win in net. 

CMS will be back in action next Thursday when it welcomes in Williams for a big non-conference match-up at Zinda Field, beginning at 7 p.m.
