CMS Women's Lacrosse Fires on All Cylinders to Defeat Baldwin Wallace

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Ten different players scored goals and sophomore goalie Anna Gillespie had two saves to earn a rare complete-game shutout as the No. 25 ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team cruised to a 20-0 win over Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday evening at Zinda Field.

Senior Corie Hack and junior Emily Cohen each had four goals and two assists to lead the Athenas in points, while sophomore Sally Abel also had four goals. CMS improves to 4-0 on the year with the win, while the Yellow Jackets slip to 2-2 with the loss. 

The Athenas finished the game with a 36-7 edge in shot attempts and a 30-2 edge in shots on goal, as Gillespie made both of her saves in the second half on point blank shots in front of the cage to keep the shutout in tact. Junior defender Luisa Valles led the defense with five ground balls and three caused turnovers on the day. 

CMS wasted little time taking control of the game, as freshman Alex Futterman scored the first goal 2:48 into the contest, which was followed 17 seconds later when sophomore Julia Mueller scored in front in a rush off the draw control off a feed from Hack. Futterman, Hack and Abel then scored three goals in a span of 1:06 to stretch the lead to 5-0 and force Baldwin Wallace to an early timeout just 6:21 into the game. 

Freshman Sammie Cohen stretched it 6-0, then fed Hack for a goal, who rattled off three straight tallies to make it a 9-0 lead with 11:21 left in the half. Emily Cohen then scored her first with 9:37 left to extend the lead to double digits, and the Athenas were able to stretch it to 14-0 at halftime, as Abel scored three times in the final 6:10.

The second half saw other players get in on the scoring act, as junior Sascha Reynolds and senior Carly Keeney each scored their first goals of the season, while freshman Tessa Guerra scored her third.  Cohen capped off the scoring with 11:39 left, matching Abel and Hack with her game-high fourth, as the Athenas were able to ride out the clock to an easy win. 

CMS was able to play most of its roster, which was key as some big games loom over the next few days. The Athenas cross the street on Friday to face Pomona-Pitzer in a battle for first place in the SCIAC, then return home to Zinda to meet Colorado College on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a rematch of last year's NCAA Second Round contest, which Colorado College won at home.
