Sally Abel, Kira Weiss Sweep SCIAC Weekly Honors for CMS Women's Lacrosse

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore midfielder Sally Abel was named the SCIAC Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, and junior defender Kira Weiss was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week for games through Sunday, Feb. 24, the conference office announced today.

Abel and Weiss earned their honors after helping CMS start the 2019 season with a pair of league wins, defeating Whittier 22-7 on the road on Wednesday and then knocking off Redlands 18-3 at home on Saturday. The Athenas have now won 26 consecutive games against SCIAC opponents, dating back to a loss to Chapman in the 2016 league tournament, and have won 28 straight regular season games against Division III foes (their only regular season loss last year came to Division I UC Davis).

Abel tied for the team lead in points in both contests this week. She finished the Whittier win with five goals and two assists for seven points, and then followed that up with four goals and an assist in the win over Redlands. The seven points set a new career high for Abel, who scored six goals in a game last year against Chapman for her previous high-water mark.

Weiss, meanwhile, matched a career high in ground balls with six in the win over Redlands, when she helped hold the Bulldogs to only three goals. She had a game-high five caused turnovers as well, one shy of her career best. Over the two games, Weiss and the defense helped hold their two opponents to only 22 shot attempts combined.

CMS will be back in action at home on Wednesday when it battles Chapman at Zinda Field for a 7 p.m. contest.
