CMS Women's Lacrosse Opens 2019 Season with 22-7 Win at Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. - Senior midfielder Corie Hack tallied seven goals, while sophomore Sally Abel and freshman Alex Fetterman each added five as the CMS women's lacrosse team opened its 2019 season with a 22-7 win at Whittier on Wednesday evening, using a 9-0 run spanning both halves to put the game awawy.

With the win, CMS has now won 27 regular season games in a row against Division III competition, since falling to Tufts early in the 2017 season. The only loss the Athenas suffered in the regular season last year was their opener at Division I UC Davis.

The Athenas had to withstand a first-half challenge from the Poets, who fell behind 6-1 early, but came back to within two goals on three different occasions by scoring on six of their seven shots in the first half. Futterman scored off an assist from Abel to fight off the first Whittier rally and make it 7-4, before freshman Sammie Cohen scored to make it 8-5. Whittier once again closed to 8-6, but Abel found Futterman again with 2:57 left in the half to start a huge CMS rally to put the game away.

Hack scored 55 seconds later to stretch the CMS lead to 10-6 and Futterman finished off the first half scoring with an unassisted tally to give the Athenas an 11-6 lead going into halftime.  The momentum carried over, as Blaire Southmayd found the net in the first minute of the second half to make the sore 12-6, before freshman Tessa Guerra scored her first collegiate goal at the 28:03 mark off an assist from Allie Hill

Futterman scored her fourth goal of the contest to continue the run, before Abel had back-to-back unassisted goals 41 seconds apart to make it a 16-6 game just 4:03 into the second half. Hack then capped off the 9-0 run with a goal 6:15 into the second half, as the Athenas scored the nine goals over a span of just 9:12, over both halves.

Lexie Meanor scored on the first shot of the second half for Whittier with 21:15 to go, but that was the final time the Poets would score, as CMS scored the final five goals of the contest to make the final 22-7.

Sammie Cohen finished with three goals and two assists to get a hat trick in her first collegiate contest, while Hill had a team-high four assists, pushing her over the 100-point plateau (52 goals, 50 assists, 102 points) in the first game of her junior season. Futtmeran and Hill also tied for team-high honors with eight draw controls to help CMS hold a 20-10 advantage in that department, while the Athenas also ended with a commanding 50-10 edge in shots. Hill also added four ground balls and three caused turnovers to complete her solid stat line, while Hack had a team-high four caused turnovers.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday for its home opener on Saturday against Redlands at 11 a.m., which will be played at Parents Field.
