Five Athenas named to IWLCA All-West Region Teams
CLAREMONT, Calif. – Five players from the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse program were named to the All-West Region First and Second Teams, as announced by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association on May 12. Senior midfielder Cara Cancelmo (CMC) and junior midfielder Evan Murphy (CMC) earned First Team honors while junior attacker Lauren Clubb (CMC), freshman attacker Emily Cohen (CMC), and junior defender Katie Hill (CMC) were named to the Second Team.
All five Athenas honored in the Region were First Team selections for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Cancelmo earns her second All-Region honor after being named to the Second Team in 2015. This season, she led the team with 53 draw controls and was second to Murphy in the conference at 33 caused turnovers. Against Occidental in the final game of the regular season, she scored three goals on three shots and added seven draw controls and forced four turnovers.
This is Murphy's first All-Region award after making an impact on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field. She led the conference in caused turnovers at 40 and was additionally third on the team for scoring with 31 goals. During the regular season, she wreaked havoc against Colorado College with a trio of goals plus six of each caused turnovers and groundballs.
Clubb was previously named to the All-Region Second Team with Cancelmo in 2015, making this her second ILWCA honor. Clubb started all 18 games and boasted a 52.3 shot percentage. During the season, she tallied 47 points including 23 goals and 24 assists. Her highest point total was in the first game against Occidental wherein she netted three goals herself and assisted six.
Cohen instantly made a splash in her rookie season for the Athenas garnering First Team All-SCIAC and Second Team All-Region honors. She was the team's most prolific goal scorer at 49 and also led the team with 59 points. Her aggressive play allowed her to pick up 31 groundballs. Cohen scored at least a hat trick in 10 games in the 2017 season.
Hill earns her first All-Region honor after being named the SCIAC's Defensive Athlete of the Year. The junior captained the Athenas' defense and held opponents to a mere 5.00 goals against in SCIAC play and 6.50 overall. CMS only allowed double-digit scoring on three occasions, including the NCAA Second Round game against Colorado College.
