Excellent defending gives CMS 14-6 win

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team (5-1) showed some muscle against Connecticut College (0-2) on Thursday morning as the Athenas dominated their way to a 14-6 victory. After a tough loss against Tufts, the Athenas bounced back thanks to their tenacious defending and physical play.

Freshman Emily Cohen (CMC) led the team with four goals and two assists while junior Evan Murphy (CMC) added two goals and caused four turnovers. Junior Teresa Despres (HMC) did an outstanding job in front of the net, commanding the defense to limit the Camels' ball movement and breaking down the opposing offense. She finished the game with six saves. Jamie Navoni recorded two goals and caused two turnovers while Tina Balzotti had three goals, but the Camels struggled to find production from the rest of their lineup.

Sophomore Maddie Geary (CMC) struck first less than a minute into the game after taking a pass from freshman Allie Hill (CMC). After Balzotti evened the score less than a minute later, the Athenas broke out on a 3-0 run to take a 4-1 lead with 21:25 left in the half. The two teams remained in a deadlock for over 10 minutes until the Camels struck back to cut the lead in half. CMS responded by pressing harder on the offensive end, taking plenty of shots at goal and picking up each other's missed attempts. The Athenas broke out with a 5-0 run, including two goals from sophomore Corie Hack (CMC) and Cohen to take a 9-2 lead at the half.

Cohen opened up the scoring in the second half to extend the Athenas' lead, but Connecticut played more aggressively and managed to score three straight to cut the deficit. The Athenas responded with a tighter defense, holding the Camels in the middle of the field. After 10 scoreless minutes, Geary added a goal to make it 11-5. The Camels struggled to cover the deficit and CMS closed the game with a 3-0 run to make it 14-6.

The Athenas will close their road trip tomorrow morning against Amherst at 9 a.m. PDT.
