Near shutout of Whitman puts CMS back in win column

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Senior goalie Kate Anello (CMC) and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team allowed just one goal in each half as CMS moved back into the win column with a 17-2 win over Whitman, March 14 on Zinda Field. CMS has now won five of its last six matches.

Anello came away with nine saves, the defense forced 20 turnovers and CMS (5-2, 4-1 SCIAC) came up with 47 ground balls as it led throughout the match in the lopsided win.

After a scoreless first six minutes of the match, freshman attacker Carly Keeney (CMC) jumpstarted the CMS offense with two of the team's first three goals. CMS moved out to a 3-0 lead after Keeney's second goal of the game at 19:08 on the clock. Whitman scored its first goal of the match on a free position shot from Lindsay Schwartz, 15:41 before halftime. Sophomore midfielder Ellen Berkley (CMC) came right back with a goal for CMS that made it 4-1 and started a 5-0 run to close out the first half.

The 5-0 first-half run ballooned into a 12-0 run over the course of the second half as CMS put the game away. Schwartz ended the CMS run and made it 15-2 but just 5:32 remained on the clock. Sophomore attacker Kendall Greenberg (CMC) closed out the CMS wins with back-to-back goals, the last of which came just before the final horn sounded.
