First half deficit costs CMS in 2016-opening loss to Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In its first match of the season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's lacrosse team played even in the second half, but the first half ended up costing CMS in an 8-5 loss at Pomona-Pitzer on Feb. 24 at the South Athletics Complex.

Over roughly the first 20 minutes of the first half, Pomona-Pitzer (1-0, 1-0 SCIAC) outscored CMS 4-0. Pomona-Pitzer held a 4-0 lead until freshman midfielder Corie Hack (CMC) scored her first-career goal on a free position shot with 38 seconds left before halftime.

CMS (1-0, 1-0 SCIAC) came out firing in the first three-plus minutes of the second half with four shots on goal, all of which were saved by Pomona-Pitzer goalie Gaby Fukumura (she had nine in the match). Junior midfielder Zoe Pinczower (CMC) then broke through for a CMS goal to make it 4-2 with 26:41 remaining. Pomona-Pitzer then answered with three-straight scores, two of which were by Sarah Markowitz, to make the score 7-2 with 13:06 on the clock.

The final 13 minutes of the match saw CMS outscore Pomona-Pitzer 3-1, but CMS was only able to get within three scores (7-4 and 8-5) the rest of the night. Sophomore Katie Hill (CMC) scored two of CMS' three final goals, the other coming from senior attacker Christina Coffin (CMC). Hill had assists on three of the goals for the Athenas and Hack and senior defender Alex Savino (CMC) each won a team-high three ground balls. Senior goalie Kate Anello (CMC) saved seven shots for CMS.

The Athenas are back on the road Saturday, Feb. 27 against Chapman at 7 p.m. Live stats and video are available.
