NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team got off to a solid start at the four-day NCAA Division III Championships, ending the first round in a tie for fifth place on Tuesday at the Keene Trace Golf Club.
CMS shot +19 after the first 18 holes, which puts it in a four-way tie for fifth with Redlands, NYU and Texas-Dallas, but only two shots out of third. Emory (+7) and Carnegie Mellon (+10) separated from the pack a litle bit, but a cluster of eight teams all stand between +17 and +22.
The cutline after the second round (top 18) currently sits at +34, which puts the Athenas in strong contention to qualify for the final two rounds.
Stella Cheng and Jessie Kong led CMS by shooting 75 (+3) in their opening rounds, which is tied for 18th on the individual leaderboard. Christine Yu shot a 77 and currently places in a tie for 35th (out of 150 golfers).
Round two takes place tomorrow, with CMS in the later group, beginning its second round at 12:40 p.m.
