Halfway Home: Athenas Lead By Five, Loncki Tied For Top

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – After two days of the 2018 NCAA Division III National Championship, the No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team is leading the field of 25 teams with a two-day total of 628 strokes (+44). Playing at the par-73, 5,804-yard El Campeon Golf Course at Mission Inn Resort, the Athenas lead by five strokes over the No. 4 Williams Ephs after two rounds.

The Athenas created a little bit of breathing room on Day Two of the National Championships with a 25-over, 317 on Wednesday. CMS entered the day tied with the No. 4 Williams Ephs on top of the leaderboard after a Day One, 311 (+19), but bested their playing partners by five strokes to take the lead at the midpoint of the Tournament. After Round Two, the Athenas stand five strokes clear of the Ephs with a total of 628 strokes across the two days compared to 633 from the Ephs. No. 3 New York University (637), No. 10 Carnegie Mellon (639), and No. 1 George Fox (647) round out the top-five in the team race.

In the individual standings, Margaret Loncki (CMC) battled through a tough start on Wednesday and finished the day with a two-over, 75. She now sits in a two-way tie on top of the leaderboard at six-over with Navika Kuchakulla from New York University. After five holes, Loncki was five over on the day, but made six birdies in her final 13 holes to finish the day with the third-lowest round in the field.

Mira Yoo (CMC) turned in a five-over, 78 on Wednesday and sits in a four-way tie for seventh place in the Tournament at 10-over. Yoo made six pars and three bogies on the front nine to shoot a three-over, 39 on the way out before making a pair of birdies and a pair of doubles on the back to come home in 39 (+2).

Midway through the Tournament, Emma Kang (CMC) is tied for 15th place at 13-over. Kang carded a seven-over, 80 on Wednesday with a birdie on the sixth hole, highlighting her second round of the week.

Emily Attiyeh (CMC) shot an 84 (+11) on Wednesday to round out the Athenas scoring on the day. The freshman made seven pars in her round and made a birdie on the par-four, ninth hole. After two rounds, Attiyeh is tied for 50th place at 21-over.

Also tied for 50th place is Kelly Ransom (CMC). After a strong, 77 in the First Round, Ransom put a couple of big numbers on the card on Wednesday, shooting a 90 (+17).

The Athenas will be back on the course on Thursday afternoon, starting at 1:20 p.m. ET/10:20 p.m. PT. Just as they have in the first two rounds, CMS will play alongside Williams College. The Athenas and Ephs will play with the third-place New York University Violets.
