Upward trend continues as Athenas close SCIAC Championships in second

BEAUMONT, Calif. – A pair of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golfers finished in the top-5 to help lead CMS to a second place finish at the 2016 SCIAC Championships and a second place finish in the overall conference standings.

CMS (939) finished behind Redlands (929) in both the final tournament and the final conference standings. Pomona-Pitzer (948) finished third at the SCIAC Championships, followed by Whittier (976) and Cal Lutheran (985) in fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Athenas saved their best round for the third and final round to cap three-consecutive days of improved scores. The tournament opened for the Athenas with a 318 followed by a 314 in the second round and 307 in the final round.

Freshman Kelly Ransom (CMC) finished in fourth place overall (231), seven shots behind individual medalist Caroline Ordian of Redlands. She closed the tournament with her best round (and the Athenas' best round) of the event, a 3-over par 75. Sophomore Maya Bhat (CMC) came away in fifth place (236) and freshman Mary Bryan Owen (CMC) tied for ninth (239). Both Bhat and Mary Bryan Owen had scores of 76 in the third round. Sophomore Margaret Loncki (CMC) tied for 11th (240), junior Taylor Kain-Godoy (CMC) tied for 19th (249) and sophomore Cara Brinster (CMC) tied for 29th (257).

The Athenas had the lowest Par 4 average (4.49) in the tournament and Ransom tied for the lowest average on Par 4's for individuals (4.27).
