Athenas, Ransom finish in third at SCIAC No. 1 Tournament

BEAUMONT, Calif. – In the first conference rounds of the season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's golf team finished in third place (646) at the two-round SCIAC No. 1 Tournament, Feb. 20-21 at Tukwet Canyon Golf Course. Freshman Kelly Ransom (CMC) finished in third place in the field, the top individual finish for the Athenas. She posted back-to-back rounds of 5-over par, 77 for a total score of 154.

Whittier (624) won the team event followed by Redlands (634), CMS, Pomona-Pitzer (654), Cal Lutheran (673), Occidental (682) and La Verne (840).

Whittier's Shelby Hunt (142) finished as the individual medalist.

CMS also had another top-10 finish in addition to Ransom's third and that was sophomore Cara Brinster (CMC) who ended in 10th (162). Her second-round score of 7-over, 79 ended up being the second-best round for the Athenas during the weekend. Brinster tallied six birdies over her two rounds to lead CMS and she also was tops on the team in scoring on par 3 holes (even par) and tops in the tournament on par 5 holes (1-under).

Two shots behind Brinster, Margaret Loncki (CMC) placed in a tie for 12th. Senior Caroline Belmont (CMC) placed in a tie for 22nd (171) and junior Taylor Kain-Godoy (CMC) ended in 31st (178) for the Athenas.

CMS heads to San Marcos for the Cal State San Marcos Invitational on Feb. 29-March 1 at St. Mark Golf Club. Tee time for both rounds is 8 a.m.
