Gloria Bates Named SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week for Second Time

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior guard Gloria Bates was named the SCIAC Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week for games through Sunday, Jan. 13, the league announced today.

Bates earned the honor for the second time this season, after previously earning it following a season-opening three-game road trip to Oregon when the team's defense carried it to wins over Willamette and Pacific. It is also the third time this year that an Athena has won it, after junior guard Maya Love captured the honor last week.

Bates helped CMS to a 3-0 week, stretching its winning streak to nine games and moving it into a tie for first in the SCIAC in the loss column at 5-1. The 3-0 week included a 72-54 win over Cal Lutheran, when the Athenas knocked off a Regals team that came in undefeated in league play, holding them to just 31.4 percent shooting and forcing 22 turnovers. CMS also held Occidental to only 26.2 percent shooting in a 77-49 win on Wednesday, when Bates had all eight of her rebounds on the defensive end.

Bates capped off the week with a career-high four blocked shots in an 80-71 win over La Verne, matching Love (vs. Dallas) for the highest total for an Athena this season, while grabbing six of her eight rebounds on the defensive end.

CMS will be back in action this evening when it tries to stretch its winning streak to 10 games with a road contest at Caltech at 7 p.m.
