CMS Leads Wire-To-Wire For Victory Over Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team opened Saturday's game with a layup by Maya Love (CMC) and led wire-to-wire against the Caltech Beavers to claim a 68-47 victory. Love finished the game as the Athenas' leading scorer with 14 points in a balanced effort for CMS. A total of 12 different Athenas found the bottom of the cup and all 14 available players saw the floor in the contest.

With the win the Athenas move 14-3 on the season and 7-1 in the SCIAC.

Including Love's initial layup, the Athenas went on a 10-1 run to open Saturday's game. Love and Kate Parrish (CMC) were the catalysts in the opening period. The duo combined to score 15 of CMS' 17 points in the quarter. Love poured in eight points and grabbed four rebounds while Parrish scored seven points and collected three boards off the bench.

The Athenas held a 17-7 lead at the end of the quarter and quickly grew that lead to 21-7 in the early moments of the second quarter thanks to a pair of buckets from Lindsey Cleary (CMC). The Beavers countered with a strong run of play that pulled them within single-digits at 25-16 following a three from Grace Peng.

In the final 2:20 of the half, CMS went on an 8-2 run and took a 33-18 lead into the break.

The Athenas' run continued into the opening minutes of the third period. After a Love jumper 2:40 into the second-half, CMS had grown their lead to 19 points at 39-20. While the Athenas remained in firm control of the game, the Beavers would not go down without a fight. Caltech closed within 10 at 47-37 in the final minute of the third quarter. A three from Kailee Severt (CMC) ended the quarter and the Athenas held a 50-37 advantage heading to the final 10 minutes.

The CMS lead steadily grew throughout the fourth quarter and eventually ballooned to as many as 24 at 66-42 following a pair of free throws from Katelynn Nguyen (SC) with 3:38 remaining in the game. With the game comfortably in hand, the Athenas were able to empty the bench and use every available player in the game.

As mentioned, 12 of the 14 players that saw action scored as the Athenas earned the 68-47 victory.

Next week, the Athenas will travel to Redlands (Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.) and Cal Lutheran (Saturday at 4:00 p.m.) to complete their road schedule for the season. CMS will play their final six regular season games in the confines of Roberts Pavilion, beginning with La Verne on Jan. 31 at 7:00 p.m.
