Golden Eagles Edge Athenas in Non-Conference Meeting

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – On Wednesday night, the La Sierra Golden Eagles edged the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team 65-62. Corinne Bogle (CMC) led the Athenas with 17 points in the contest. Kailee Severt (CMC) and Maya Love (CMC) also scored in double-figure with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Love also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

The Golden Eagles were paced by Alexis Davis, who scored 18 points off the bench in a 6-12 shooting performance.

The Athenas trailed La Seirra 20-17 following the opening quarter, but CMS used a strong second quarter to take a 38-32 lead at the half. During the second quarter, Bogle scored six points to lead six different CMS scorers in the quarter. The Athenas held La Sierra scoreless over the final three minutes of half and scored eight-straight points to take the lead at the half.

Following a Bogle bucket just over four minutes into the second-half, the Athenas held their largest lead of the evening at 47-38. La Sierra called a timeout and responded by ending the quarter on a 7-2 run.

CMS halted the run early in the fourth quarter with a three from Lauren Longo (SC). Five minutes later, Bogle connected to put CMS up 58-54 with 4:32 remaining in the game. Just as they did in the third quarter, La Sierra closed out the quarter with a strong defensive stand. CMS was held to just four points over the final 4:30 of the game. The Golden Eagles took advantage on the offensive end and scored 11 of the game's final 15 points.

Despite the late run from La Sierra, things got interesting in the final minute. Severt made a bucket with 18 seconds remaining to pull the Athenas within one at 63-62, but DeShields Fajardo connected on a pair of free throws in the finals seconds to give the Golden Eagles the three-point victory.

The loss drops CMS to 3-2 on the season. The Athenas will next be in action on Saturday when they travel to Caltech for their first SCIAC game of the season. Game time with the Beavers is slated for 5:00 p.m.
