Defense holds Caltech to 38 points

PASADENA, Calif. – For the second time this season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team stormed past the California Institute of Technology for a final score of 51-38. The Athenas still lead the SCIAC with a 9-2 record with five games to play.

The CMS defense leads the conference by a significant margin and only allows 44.6 points per game. Nationally, the team ranks at No. 31 for scoring defense, but will likely bump into the top-25 when Wednesday night's performance is factored in.

For the third game in a row, the Athenas recorded double-digit steals. Senior Kris Brackmann (CMC) led with seven followed by freshman Gloria Bates (CMC) with two. The top-rebounders of the game were senior Aly Young (CMC) and freshman Maya Love (CMC), combining for 13. CMS successfully held the Beavers' second and third highest scorers to just ten points total.

The game started off slowly but then picked up in the second half. CMS doubled its halftime score of 21 in the third quarter alone. Brackmann was good for seven points in the period, hitting two shots from the field and two from the foul line. Senior Quinn Glosniak (CMC) assisted Brackmann on both buckets and then added a third assist to freshman Lindsey Cleary (CMC) for a layup.

The Athenas ultimately scored 26 points off Caltech turnovers in the game and had as much as an 18 point lead.

With the win, CMS retains the top spot in the SCIAC at 9-2. The Athenas play host for four of the five remaining games on the schedule starting with Redlands (9-10, 6-4) at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 in a double header with the men's team.
