Severt named Athlete of the Year; Dungca and Brackmann on First Team

PASADENA, Calif. – Three players from the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team earned All-Conference honors, as announced by the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) on Thursday. Sophomore Kailee Severt (CMC) earned Athlete of the Year honors and juniors Jai Dungca (CMC) and Kris Brackmann (CMC) were named to the First Team.

This is Severt's second All-SCIAC award after earning Newcomer of the Year honors in the 2014-15 season. She led CMS with 12.4 points per game during SCIAC play, shooting 40.4 percent from the field and 41 percent from beyond the arc, good for second in the conference and in the top-25 nationally. Severt made all but one free throw in the regular season for 96 percent. This significantly contributed to CMS currently being ranked No. 5 in the nation at 76.3 percent for free throws.

Brackmann earns her second-consecutive First Team honor and was the Athenas' third highest scorer at 8.2 points per game. She averaged 27.5 minutes and hit 82.9 percent of her free throws. Brackmann grabbed 65 defensive rebounds in the SCIAC season for ninth in conference and recorded 21 steals.

Dungca earns her first All-Conference award in her first season as a starter for the Athenas. She averaged 9.3 points per game and baffled opponents with her ability to drive in and make a layup. Dungca was effective from three-point range as well, shooting 35.6 percent on the season. She led all Athenas playing 29.6 minutes per game.

The CMS defense led the conference for the third straight year in fewest points allowed; this year they allowed just 48.6 points per game, and held opponents' field goal percentage at a mere 33.5 percent. CMS averaged 42.0 rebounds per game and owned an 11.1 rebound margin over opponents.

The 2015-16 Athenas won the SCIAC regular season championship with a 15-1 record and then went on to earn their third-consecutive SCIAC Postseason Tournament title to advance to the NCAA Tournament. CMS faces Trinity (TX) on Friday at 5 p.m. CST (3 p.m. PST). Check the schedule page for more details.
