Physical win against Whittier puts CMS at 6-0 in SCIAC

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's basketball team played a smart and physical second half to secure a Wednesday night 62-48 win against Whittier. The Athenas scored comparably in both halves but chopped the Poets' scoring from 28 in the first to a mere 20 points in the second half.

Sophomore Ty Wheetley-Amaya (CMC) had 13 points and seven boards for a career high night in both categories.  She played 29 minutes alongside fellow sophomores Kris Brackmann (CMC) and Jai Dungca (CMC). Dungca earned her first career start while Brackmann was a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line and totaled 26 points on the night.

As a team, CMS was 24-for-30 from the line, 80%. The Athenas lead all of SCIAC teams with a 74% free throw shooting against all opponents.

Junior Mara Falahee (SCR) reached double digit rebounds with ten, eight defensively. CMS out-rebounded Whittier 44 to 35 but Whittier won the turnover battle 17 to 24.

Two Poets were in two digit scoring on the night: Ana Youngblood had 11 and Pricilla Rodriguez with 10. The tall center Youngblood had a game high of 12 rebounds.

CMS increases its record to 12-3 and remains undefeated in SCIAC at 6-0. The Athenas host La Verne in a double header with the men's team on Saturday in Pomona-Pitzer's Rains Center. The women tip off at 5 p.m. followed immediately by the men at 7 p.m.
