The Start of Something New...

The Start of Something New...

I’m new to the Athletics Department. My first day was August 8, so I’ve only been on the inside of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics for a few months. I moved across the country to be a part of something special in Southern California.

CMS initially intrigued me because it was different than most departments around the country. Sure CMS is three schools feeding into one department, which is different enough, but, in my mind, CMS Athletics is the quintessential Division III experience.

CMS offers something you don’t find many other places around the country. You have some of the best and brightest students, studying some of the most rigorous curriculum and, at the same time, those students are on the courts, fields, and courses competing on a national level.

This unique department blends the skills and abilities of student-athletes from three separate institutions into teams that are known across the country as some of the best around.

My goal as Sports Information Director is to cover our teams and keep you up-to-date on what’s happening in all 21 of our programs. A big part of my job is updating and managing our athletics website and social media accounts that cover the day-to-day activities around the department. We write game recaps, post stories on award winners, create highlight videos, and get you ready for a new season or postseason runs with preview articles. While this coverage is necessary to keep you apprised as to what’s happening in Claremont, it really just scratches the surface when it comes to our department. It doesn’t dig into what makes CMS special.

Sure those posts cover the highlights, but you want more. As an alumni, you want to hear how things are going on your old team. As a student, you want to hear the perspective of your friends and classmates. As a parent, you want to hear from your son or daughter and see what exactly they’re up to. As a high school student looking at CMS, you want to hear what being a Stag or an Athena is really all about. And everyone who’s a fan of CMS Athletics wants to hear more from the student-athletes and coaches who are competing with CMS across their chest.

As a result, we’re going to try something a little new. It’s called After the Whistle. This new series will not change how we report on CMSathletics.org, but is will give us an opportunity to feature new content that’s got a different flavor from what we normally post on our homepage. I’ll be working with student-athletes, coaches, administrators, staff members, and maybe some alumni to help take you (the fans) behind the curtain of CMS Athletics.

These stories will be right from the student-athletes, coaches, and department members themselves. My goal is for you to get to know CMS Athletics beyond just what’s happening on the field and get to know the people that make this department so special.
