CMS records broken at rainy PP Invite

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track and field team competed in the 30th Annual Pomona-Pitzer Invite through the intermittent rain on Saturday. The athletes battled through uncharacteristically cold and difficult conditions and ultimately set three new CMS records.
Sophomore Tyra Abraham (SCR) set the CMS record for the 200 meter dash at a blazing 24.85. She finished fourth overall but the led all collegians in the extremely competitive event. Also at the meet, she was the top collegian in the 100 meter dash at 12.01 and then went on to place second in the 4x100 relay, with Brittany Griffin (CMC), Aiyanna Cameron-Lewis (CMC), and Sabrine Griffith (CMC) and first in the 4x400 relay with Becca Stewart (SCR), Carmen Mejia (SCR) and Cameron-Lewis. Abraham holds the CMS and SCIAC record in the 100 m and is now at the top of CMS and seventh in SCIAC for the 200 m.
Junior Vaiva Palunas (SCR) continued to shine, even in the rain. She won the discus, throwing 14 feet farther than the second place finisher, and set a new CMS and SCIAC record with a throw of 46.62 meters. This is the third time that Palunas has exceeded the old SCIAC record so far this season.
Sophomore Emily Bassett (CMC) broke the CMS record in the hammer throw, last set in 2001. At 54.95/180-3, she threw almost eight feet farther than the previous record holder. She ranks No. 3 all-time in the SCIAC, just behind coach Christa Youngern at 57.57/188-10 for Cal Lutheran in 2010.
Other strong performances for the Athenas included sophomore Bryn McKillop (SCR) who ran a well-executed race in the 1500 meter, placing her eighth all-time in the SCIAC. Cameron-Lewis placed second in the 800 meter run at 2:09.98 which was not only fast but also really well-executed as well.
The men's distance group took a big step forward, most notably with a seasonal best from sophomore Kevin Huang (HMC) in the 1500 meter run at 3:56.74, and two big performances in the 5000 meter run from junior Kyle Lund (HMC) at 14.52.65 (new personal best) and senior Zorg Loustalet (HMC) at 14.57.60, good for second and fourth place finishes for the Stags in the event.
Next up is the final SCIAC multi-dual meet against La Verne, and Pomona-Pitzer on April 16 before the SCIAC Championships April 29-30.
