CMS Softball No-Hits John Carroll for 6-0 Win

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Five different Athena pitchers combined on a no-hitter as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team took a 6-0 win over John Carroll on Friday afternoon at Athena Field.

Hannah Adams got the start and retired the first 10 batters in order, striking out five, before coming out after her pre-determined pitch count was reached. Jade Johnson finished out the fourth by getting the final two outs, Maya Loper threw 1.1 innings and struck out two, Maya Weigel-Murphy went 1.1 innings to get it to two outs in the seventh, and Ella Yerkes came on for the final out to finish it off, getting a fly ball to Giselle Lai in center.

CMS moves to 3-3 on the season with its third straight win, after having its previous two scheduled dates rained out, including a doubleheader at Vanguard on Saturday, and a single game with York on Monday, Feb. 26 that was halted in progress and not completed. CMS had not had a completed game since Feb. 24, when it swept St. Katherine, and after today's scheduled doubleheader was shortened to a single game due to field conditions, the Athenas went with an all-staff outing to try to get their pitchers some work.

CMS got its offense early with two runs in the first on a Paige Zimmerman two-run single with the bases loaded. After an unearned run in the second, Rachel Sapirstein had a two-run triple in the third, and came home on a perfect bunt single from Ellie Novogradac

The only jam for the CMS staff was in the fourth, when Loper got the final out via strikeout with the bases loaded after two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. Sapirstein made a solid snag of a line drive in the sixth to take away the best bid that the Blue Streaks had for a hit. Zimmerman made a couple of clean plays at shortstop in the seventh to help set up the final out.

Zimmerman ended up 2-for-3 with two RBI to pace the CMS offense as well, while Novogradac was 1-for-1 with a run scored and an RBI and Sapirstein was 1-for-2 with her two RBI.

The Athenas will be back in action when they travel this week to the Tucson Invitational, beginning with games against Wisconsin-La Crosse and Eastern Connecticut on Monday.
