CMS Softball Takes Series From Whittier with Saturday Road Split

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team earned a series win from Whittier, taking the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday 6-3 and falling in the nightcap 5-4, after winning the opening game yesterday 2-1.  

With the split, CMS moves to 20-9 overall and 8-4 in the in the SCIAC, while the Poets, who came into the weekend tied with the Athenas in the SCIAC, now stand a game back at 7-5.

In the opening game, Whittier took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Athenas came right back with two in the top of the sixth to take the lead back for good. After Jacqueline Solomon drew a one-out walk, Kristin LeBlanc hit a clutch RBI double to tie the score up. Paige Zimmerman followed with a single to move LeBlanc to third, and the two executed a first-and-third play with LeBlanc coming home on Zimmerman's steal of second.

Abby Thompson added an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI double, and LeBlanc had her second RBI hit in as many innings as she played Thompson to make the score 6-3. Thompson and LeBlanc both finished 2-for-4, while Hannah Adams got the win in relief.

CMS trailed 3-0 after four innings in Saturday's nightcap, but came back with one run in the fifth and three in the sixth to go ahead 4-3. Paige Zimmerman had an RBI double in the fifth to plate pinch-runner Megan Kho and cut the lead to 3-1.

In the sixth, Kaili Aqui and Emma Suh set the table with infield singles, and Destiny Garcia followed with an RBI double. Rachel Sapirstein tied the score with an RBI fielder's choice to pitcher, and Jacqueline Solomon had an RBI groundout to give CMS the lead.

However, Sara Luna tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, and Heaven Wolf hit a walk-off RBI single to end it with two outs. It was a reversal of the opening game of the series yesterday, which CMS won 2-1 after scoring two runs in the seventh and ending it on a walk-off RBI single from Emma Suh.

CMS will be in action next weekend for a big three-game series with league-leading Chapman. The series will begin with a single game at CMS on Friday, and then shift to a doubleheader at Chapman on Saturday.
