CMS Softball Falls to La Verne in Series Opener
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd Scripps softball team fell in an early 3-0 hole in the first inning and were unable to rally, falling 4-0 to the La Verne Leopards in the opener of a three-game series on Friday at Athena Field.
With the loss, CMS drops to 13-14 on the season and 6-4 in the SCIAC, while LA Verne improved to 18-8 on the year and 5-2 in the SCIAC.
The Leopards scored three runs in the first and one in the fourth to jump out to a 4-0 advantage. Emily Nutting finished 2-of-3 on the evening to lead the Athenas, while Abby Thompson and Kaili Aqui also added one hit apiece for CMS.
Thompson and Nutting both recorded doubles to center field with two outs in the seventh to try to start a rally, but the Leopards were able to hold on for the win.
The two teams will complete their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader at La Verne, beginning at 12 p.m.
