Lauren Richards Named SCIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore pitcher Lauren Richards earned the SCIAC Softball Pitcher of the Week Award for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team after a 2-1 opening weekend for the Athenas, the conference office announced today.
Richards earned the honor after picking up both wins in the circle as CMS opened up its 2020 campaign with a 2-1 series win over Chapman. On opening day on Friday, she threw six shutout innings and allowed five hits in a 6-0 road win over the Panthers. On Saturday, after Chapman won the opening game of the doubleheader, Richards took to the circle for the rubber game and threw a complete-game four-hitter as CMS earned the 5-1 win.
Richards continued to add to her impressive resume in conference competition. As a first-year pitcher last spring, she had a 16-1 record in SCIAC games, nearly going through the entire season undefeated before suffering a loss in relief to Whittier on the final weekend of the regular season. With her two wins against Chapman, she now stands at 18-1 in league games, including 15-0 as a starter.
CMS will be back in action this weekend for two more home doubleheaders, taking on Vanguard on Saturday at 12 p.m. and Pacific Lutheran on Sunday at 12 p.m.
