Megan Perron Chosen SCIAC Softball Offensive Player of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Megan Perron, who had seven RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Occidental which clinched the SCIAC regular season title for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, was named the SCIAC Softball Offensive Player of the Week for games through April 21, the league office announced today.

Perron was 3-for-4 with three RBI in an 8-7 win over Occidental in the opening game on Saturday, and then drove in all four Athena runs in a 4-3 win in the nightcap. She hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to stake CMS to a 3-0 lead, and after Occidental came back to tie it in the top of the seventh, she had the game-winning RBI double off the wall in the bottom of the seventh to score the winning run. Over the course of the doubleheader, she hit for the cycle, with a triple and two singles in the opener, and a home run, double  and single in the nightcap.

With the big day, Perron improved her batting average to .483 on the season, which leads the SCIAC and ranks 24th nationally. She also ranks second in the SCIAC in runs batted in with 40 and in doubles with 13, one shy of the leaders in both categories.

The two wins helped CMS improve to 30-7 on the year, reaching the 30-win plateau for the eighth time this decade. The Athenas also improved to 24-2 in the SCIAC, clinching the regular season title outright and earning CMS the right to host the conference tournament from May 3-5 at Athena Field. It is the first time that CMS has won the regular season title since 2011, after a string of six straight seasons of finishing second, followed by a fourth-place finish last year (after which the Athenas went on to capture the conference tournament and earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament).

Before starting postseason play, CMS will close out the regular season on Saturday with a road doubleheader at Whittier.
