Athenas reclaim second place with decisive sweep of Cal Lu

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team came roaring back for a sweep of Cal Lutheran in two quick games on Saturday afternoon, 5-1 and 8-0 (5 inn.). The Athenas only allowed one run on the day and scored 13.

Game 1: CMS 5, Cal Lu 1 – Box Score

The very first ground ball of the game found freshman second baseman Sarah Whitney (CMC) in just her fourth start. Whitney went up the middle for a deft backhand play and kick-started what would become a big win for the Athenas.

CMS got on the board in the bottom of the second when junior Katie Savard (CMC) scored off junior catcher Carlene Roberts' (CMC) double to right center. Roberts swung a hot bat on Saturday and smacked a homer in the sixth inning to give the Athenas the 5-1 lead.

Savard was 2-for- 3 in the game with an RBI double in the fourth inning, plating junior Janelle Shiozaki (CMC). Shiozaki had come in to run for freshman Briana Halle (CMC) who had led off the inning with a sharp single to left center.

Sophomore center fielder Alexa Heydenberk (CMC) made another stellar defensive play, diving on a sinking line drive up the middle to save a hit.

In the circle, freshman Anna Gurr (CMC) had another outstanding complete game performance. She struck out two and only allowed three hits in seven innings. Gurr improves to 9-4 with a 2.49 ERA.

Game 2: CMS 8, Cal Lu 0 (5 inn.) – Box Score

The Athenas scored at least one run each inning during the second game of the day. After an unusually dry outing at the plate during the first game, junior shortstop Tara Robinson (CMC) went 4-for-4 in game two with three runs scored.

As the leadoff, Robinson got the offense going in the bottom of the first after a quick three outs in the top of the frame. Freshman right fielder Carly Roleder (CMC) had the first of her two RBIs of the game in the first inning.

Sophomore pitcher Andrea Jewett (CMC) went the first three innings only allowing one baserunner who did not even advance into to scoring position.

Freshman left fielder Elaine Wang (CMC) drove in Robinson and Savard in the second inning on a two RBI single to right center. In the third inning, Savard hit her first of two triples on the day. Heydenberk had led off the inning with a shot out to right field that hit the 210 ft. fence on the fly for a double.

In the fifth inning, junior third baseman Mikayla O'Neal (CMC) led off with a single up the middle and then scored on Savard's opposite field triple down the left field line. Roberts came in for a pinch hit sacrifice fly for the Athenas to go up 7-0. Robinson got on for the fourth time in the game on a single up the middle and then Wang drove her in for the walk-off win.

CMS only allowed three hits for the second time on the day and Jewett threw her second complete game shutout of the season.

The only Regal to have a multi-hit day was right fielder Amanda Lewis during the first game.

The second seeded Athenas (20-10, 14-8) host seventh seeded Pomona-Pitzer (13-19, 8-12) on Saturday, Apr. 18 for a 12 & 2 p.m. double header.
