Big second innings lead to sweep of Tigers in home opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In the first home games of the season, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps softball team swept Occidental College 7-3 and 8-0. Two returning pitchers, Molly Rubidoux (CMC) and Andrea Jewett (CMC) earned the team's first SCIAC games of the season.

Game 1: CMS 7, Occidental 3

Shortstop Tara Robinson (CMC) led the Athenas with three hits and two runs scored.

CMS put up a big five-run inning early in the game kick-started by a double by Alexa Heydenberk (CMC). Brooklyn Robinson (SCR) broke it open with a shot down the right field line for a triple.

In the circle, freshman Anna Gurr (CMC) started the game and struck out four batters in three innings pitched. Rubidoux, earned the win only allowing one hit in the final four innings.

Game 2: CMS 8, Occidental 0 (5 innings)

The Athenas continued what was started in the first game, easily earning the second win on the day.

Carly Roleder (CMC) smacked her second hit in the double header to lead off the second inning. Roleder then scored on a triple by Mikayla O'Neal (CMC). Brooklyn Robinson came up big again with a two RBI double plating Janelle Shiozaki (CMC) and Chloe Rodman (CMC). The Athenas scored seven runs in the second inning as CMS more than batted around the order.

Jewett came out strong and went four complete innings without an earned run or a walk. Additionally, she struck out two and the Athena defense played flawlessly behind her.

For the Tigers, Morgan Giusti hit two doubles to right field in the first game and was 3-for-4 on the day. Mariah Montgomery was 2-for-3 in the second game

The Athenas showcased some of the new faces on the team as Madeleine Edwards (SCR) had two plate appearances, laying down an excellent sacrifice bunt in the first game; Sarah Whitney (CMC) played a pair a innings at second base and recorded an assist and a put out; Briana Halle (CMC) had an at bat in the first game and then closed the second from the circle, relieving Jewett.

O'Neal was 3-for-5 between the two games including the triple and two RBI. Tara Robinson was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and Kristyne Hong (CMC) went 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot in the line up.

CMS (3-1, 2-0 SCIAC) next faces Willamette from the Northwest conference. The Bearcats open their season this week against Concordia (NAIA) and then Pomona-Pitzer before taking on the Athenas in a home double header on Saturday Feb. 21.
