CMS Drops First Sixth Street Rivalry Game to Pomona-Pitzer
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Gavin Rosser scored three goals, but the CMS men's water polo team was unable to come all the way back from an early 4-0 deficit and fell 11-7 to Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday at Axelrood Pool.
The loss drops CMS to 10-12 on the year and 4-3 in SCIAC play, while Pomona-Pitzer stays alone in first place at 6-1. The teams will meet again in the regular season finale on Nov. 12 at Pomona-Pitzer.
The Stags didn't net their first goal until 4:47 left in the half when Thomas Walker scored. He was followed 1:43 later by Rosser's first goal as CMS closed to within 4-2 to try to take some momentum into halftime. Pomona-Pitzer, though, scored twice in the final 1:39 of the half to restore its largest lead at 6-2.
CMS played its best water polo of the night coming out of the locker room, as it scored three goals in a span of 2:34 to suddenly pull within a single goal. Luke (Bear) Weigle started the run off a Walker pass on the first possession of the half, and Rosser followed with his second and third goals in span of 1:04.
That was as close as CMS would come, though, as Pomona-Pitzer scored the final two goals of the third, and added the first two of the fourth. Auggie Aliaga scored twice for the Stags in the fourth, but the Sagehend were able to finish off the 11-7 win.
CMS will be back in an action for a non-conference game against Biola on Friday, and then get back to SCIAC play at La Verne on Nov. 2.
