Maxwell Knowles Named SCIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Maxwell Knowles captured the SCIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week Award for events through Sunday, Feb. 16, the conference office announced today.

Knowles returned to the javelin nine months after winning the SCIAC title and came through with another first-place finish, topping a field of 18 competitors at the Pomona-Pitzer Collegiate All-Comers meet on Saturday. Knowles passed 190 feet in his first action of the 2020 season, finishing with a winning distance of 190 feed two inches, to lead a 1-2-3 finish for the Stags in the event. 

In fact, just like the SCIAC Championships from a year ago, the Stags had the top three finishers in the javelin on Saturday. Knowles' younger brother, Truman Knowles, was the runner-up with a throw of 181 feet, three inches in his first collegiate competition, while junior Jordan Venglass, last year's runner-up at SCIACs, was third with a throw of 167'5". Junior Connor Schulz was also fifth in the javelin and junior Ross Rainaldi came in eighth as CMS dominated with five of the top eight finishers. 

Knowles moved into fourth place in CMS history last year with his SCIAC-winning throw of 199 feet. Yhis spring he will be trying to pursue the school record of 208 feet, four inches, set in 2002 by Ryan Gibson, in addition to trying to repeat as SCIAC Champion. 

Knowles and the Stags will be back in action this Saturday when they host the annual Rossi Relays at the Burns Track Complex, which gets underway at 10:30 a.m.
