Maxwell Knowles Takes Fifth in Javelin for CMS Men's Track and Field at Pomona-Pitzer Invitational

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior Maxwell Knowles was the top collegiate competitor in the javelin, finishing fifth overall and moving into sixth in CMS history with a throw of 185 feet, to highlight the performance of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team on Saturday at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. 

Knowles passed his previous high of 180 feet, eight inches which had him in tenth place in program history. He now stands in sixth and has the top throw for any Stag since 2008, when Andrew Bogrand moved into third place (202'4").

The only competitors to finish ahead of Knowles at the Pomona-Pizter Invitational were from professional track clubs (BAJA and F45) or competing unattached. Sophomore Connor Schulz (172', seventh) and sophomore Jordan Venglass (161'6", 10th) were also in the top 10 for CMS in the javelin as well. 

In the sprints, senior Corbin Bethurem came in seventh place in the 100 meter dash out of 66 runners in 10.85 seconds, matching his personal best from the 2016 season, which ties him for eighth in CMS history. Senior Matthew Guillory was also in the top 20 in 11.13, while senior Jacob Adolphe (11.45, 27th) and sophomore Henry Sojico (11.46, 29th) earned top 30 finishes. 

Sophomore Alex McDonald continued his strong season in the 400-meter hurdles by finishing fifth with a time of 54.60. The only competitors ahead of him were Alison dos Santos of the Brazil National Team (winning in 52.15), Andre Chapman of Boxcar International, Jakota Brown of Division I Idaho State and Jake Woods of Division II Fresno Pacific. 

Betherum added a 23rd place finish in the 200 in 22.07 out of a field of 90, while freshman Keizo Morgan was 22nd in the 800 in 1:56.24. 

The Stags had two top 10 finishers in the 5000, with freshman Adam Wilkinson earning a fifth-place finish in 15:11.18 (tops among Division III runners), while freshman Thomas Fleming was eighth with a 15:18.29.

Freshman Miles Christensen led a pack of six Stags in the top 30 (of 100) with sub-4:00 efforts in the 1500 meters, running a 3:54.52 to finish 14th. Sophomore Evan Hassman was 19th in 3:56.61, junior Wilson Ives was 21st in 3:57.10, sophomore Stevie Steinberg was 24th in 3:57.26, sophomore Daniel Sealand was 27th in 3:58.18 and senior Ben Iten was 29th in 3:59.33. 

Senior Eric Myers finished in the top 10 in the high jump by clearing six feet (6 feet, 3/4 inch), finishing eighth, while junior Reese Peterson, the reigning SCIAC Field Athlete of the Week, was 10th in the hammer with a throw of 147 feet, placing him first among Division III competitors. 

CMS will be back in action next week for the third and final SCIAC Multi-Dual, which will be held at Occidental on Saturday.
